Four Key Elements For Evangelism 1

Four Key Elements For Evangelism

Posted by on Nov 9, 2020 in Today's Teaching

TEXT: ‘Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together’ (John 4:35-36) THOUGHT: John Chapter Four is full of evangelistic principles. Jesus, the Supreme evangelist, crossed national barriers to reach the woman at the well. He talked to her in such a way she forgot the reason why she had come there in the first place. Leaving her water pot, she went back to the city and testified about her encounter with the Messiah. Not only did people believe her story and go out to see Jesus, but after He stayed there for just two more days, many more ended up believing that He was Christ, the Saviour of the world! From our text there are four key elements to incorporate if we want to be successful in evangelism. Look – ‘Lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest’ Jesus was saying, “Do not think the harvest is future, there is a harvest to be had right...

A Good Choice! 1

A Good Choice!

Posted by on Nov 1, 2020 in Today's Teaching

TEXT: ‘But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her’ (Luke 10:42) THOUGHT: Only Luke records this incident in the home of Martha and Mary. Martha is over-concerned with serving food to Jesus and His disciples, but Mary is content to sit and listen. In response to Martha’s demand for Jesus to intervene and get Mary working, Jesus instead commends Mary’s good choice that would have lasting consequences. What choices are we making and are they the right ones? Moses challenged the Children of Israel to choose life.1 Joshua urged them to choose that day who they would serve2, adding, ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!’ What can we learn from this incident that will help us to make the right choice? Learn to stop when a once in a lifetime experience comes your way. The Bible only records a few occasions when Jesus stayed in someone’s house, whether for a few hours or overnight. After all, not everyone could accommodate Jesus and the twelve disciples, or be willing to feed them! Jesus, yes! All the others, no! Perhaps Martha had remembered the Shunammite woman who built an extension to provide accommodation for...

God’s Word 3

God’s Word

TEXT: ‘And we will never stop thanking God for this: that when we preached to you, you didn’t think of the words we spoke as being just our own, but you accepted what we said as the very Word of God—which, of course, it was—and it changed your lives when you believed it’ (1 Thessalonians 2:13 TLB) THOUGHT: Where is the Bible, God’s Word? For many people it’s on a dusty book shelf. There it stays, unopened and unread. Worse than that, there are probably millions of homes in the UK without a Bible at all! A lady attended my church in Wadebridge and became a Christian. Living in Padstow, she tried to buy a Bible there but not one shop sold them. That was in the early eighties and since then there has been a steady decline of availability in retail stores. What we think and do about the Bible, God’s Word, is so important. God’s Word Appreciated – ‘Great peace have those who love Your law’ (Psalm 119:165) I love to read my Bible first thing in the morning whenever possible. Other Christians prefer a different time of the day. I enjoyed reading the New King James Version, others a more modern translation of which there are...

One Came Running! 2

One Came Running!

TEXT: ‘Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”’ (Mark 10:17) THOUGHT: I love reading Mark’s gospel. It appears the author was in a hurry to cram in everything he wanted people to read, for he used the word “immediately” thirty-six times! This encounter between Jesus and the Rich Young Ruler is also recorded in both Matthew and Luke’s gospels, but Mark includes one phrase that makes their meeting all the more special, as we will see later in the teaching. Urgency – ‘one came running’ As Jesus was leaving the city on the road to Jerusalem, this man came running after Him. He did not want to miss seeing Jesus and ran to catch Him up. Why he had not spoken to Jesus earlier is not known, but perhaps he had heard Jesus say something that touched his heart. He wanted further information to a question he needed answering. Too many think it is alright to leave things until they are much older and nearer death. That is too costly a mistake to make, for when the time comes it may be too late. The Bible says,...

Stand Still! 1

Stand Still!

TEXT: ‘Listen to this, O Job; Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God’ (Job 37:14) THOUGHT: Last Saturday I was in Brixham Marina on my sister and her partner’s twin-engine speed boat. Talking to a man who had his boat moored nearby, he told me it only had one engine as he preferred to travel more slowly. He said one disadvantage having two engines is that it can get there so quickly, people then speed on somewhere else without fully appreciating the first place they arrived at! Today’s Teaching is entitled, “Stand Still!” I want to encourage you to do that for the following reasons. Stand Still for God’s Salvation – ‘Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today’ (Exodus 14:13) The Children of Israel had just escaped from Egypt. Pharaoh was glad to see the back of them having suffered the plagues. Then he changed his mind and sent his army to get them back. The Israelites were trapped by the Red Sea ahead and the army behind. What could they do with no weapons or experience of warfare? They cried out in fear but Moses told them, “Stand still!” Supernaturally God made a way through the Red Sea....
